Fifteen-year-old aspiring music journalist William (Patrick Fugit) joins the 1973 tour of a band called Stillwater (Billy Crudup, Jason Lee, Mark Kozelek, and John Fedevich), on assignment to write an article for Rolling Stone. He falls in with a girl named Penny Lane (Kate Hudson in a breakout role) and her posse of Band Aids, who see their travels with rockstars as a higher calling. Against the wishes of his overprotective mother (Frances McDormand), William discovers the world and himself in this Academy Award winning coming of age story.
